You found a cool old French mixte bike with cottered cranks! The Internet and Shledon Brown (RIP) says its a French thread BB and its totally roached. New cotters are terrible and expensive--oui oui! Sacreblu! Merde!!--What to do?
French thread bottom brackets are commonly found on low to mid range Bike Boom bikes: Motobecane, Gitane, Peugeot, Urago, Follis, and others. There is some overlap with Swiss threaded Bottom Brackets being speced on these old French bikes. Swiss BB shells have a 35x1mm reverse thread on the drive side, which is how a standard BSA/ English thread Bottom bracket is today.
In the long past, you would scrounge around in a smelly old bike shop for some questionable but better cups and cotters, then spend a weekend removing the old cottered stuff with more American vernacular. Maybe you'd be lucky and the grouchy mechanic would have a French thread Phil Wood or Shimano UN series square taper BB squirreled away for special bikes and special people.
Velo Orange makes (made?) some real nice square taper spindle, sealed bearing bottom brackets with alloy cups in that obsolete 35x1 French threading. IRD makes them too, but I'm partial to VO since I designed the dang things. These takeoff BB cups will fit FRENCH THREAD BB shells, not 35x1 R/L Swiss, not 36x1 R/R Italian, not 1.37x24tpi R/L English. Do not try. No returns!
Not a complete BB- they are take-off French thread Bottom Bracket cups from a Velo Orange BBset. The 35x1 R/R threads on both sides are clockwise to install, counterclockwise to remove.
These VO cups are compatible with bottom brackets commonly found from Taiwan and Japan made cartridge BB's from Velo Orange, Interloc Racing Design (IRD) Tange-Seiki, First, RPM, Full Speed Ahead and others. They are designed to fit over a 6002 RS or MR 0036 series sealed bearings. Double check! No Returns!
How to install:
- The Fixed cup needs to be removed from your existing Bottom Bracket with 6002 bearings. To do that, support the fixed cup in a vise and gently tap spindle with a hammer so the BB falls away from the cup.
- To install, press the French thread fixed cup in the bearing. set it deeper with a few gentle taps with your hammer.
- Grease your threads, install the drive side BB in your French thread frame with a standard Shimano UN compatible BB tool. Then do the non drive side.
- Choose your favorite crank and finish your build!
